Kodak UltraMax 400 featuring colorful surf fins

The hills were already starting to change from green to golden yellow as the seasons transitioned into early spring. This moment caught my eye with the colorful fins almost blending into the background hillscape. The board was still dripping wet as we changed out of our wetsuits and prepared to load up for the drive home.

Kodak Ultra Max 400

*Amazon describes the film as

  • “Known For Its Exceptional Sharpness And Fine Grain.
  • ….Providing Vibrant Colors And Consistent Performance”
  • “Advanced Emulsion Technology Offers Enriched Color Saturation And Optimal Contrast.”

In this photo I am seeing a strong contrast between the fin color and dark car racks just beneath the surfboard. The grain appears very fine, but definitely noticeable, lending to the great tactile feel that film presents. And the sharpness of the rail really comes through, leading the eye towards the fins and hillscape background which begin the blur due to the open F4 aperture. As I’m learning more about film, I did some reading about Emulsion Technology, and learned that it is a common manufacturing process for film brands. The Emulsion process refers to adding multiple layers each with it’s own color range onto the film stock or base, which is typically cellulose or polyester.

As I continue to shoot film I’ll be posting my images and film type to document and learn the different film stock qualities and what their key characteristics are.
